A Family's Two‑Decade Journey with the Spartans

After two decades of shaping the East Longmeadow High School baseball program, the DiFranco family announced that they will step away from their coaching roles, bringing to a close a legacy that intertwined family ties with community sport.

Craig and Kyle DiFranco were pivotal in the Spartans’ first league championship in more than twenty years, captured in 2006, and helped the team claim its inaugural Western Massachusetts Division I title the following year.

Craig, a 2007 graduate and three‑sport captain, earned a place in the ELHS Athletic Hall of Fame, while Kyle followed suit in 2009, sharing the same athletic accolades and later returning to the program as a fundamentals coach.

When Craig reassumed the head coaching position in 2014, he assembled a staff that paired Kyle’s instructional focus with Rich Bedard’s experience as bench coach; after Bedard’s retirement, Mark DiFranco took over the bench role, describing the chance to coach alongside his sons as one of the greatest blessings of his life.

The coaching trio emphasized that the program’s true measure lay not in wins but in the personal growth of its players, fostering an environment where character development took precedence over statistics.

Craig reflected on the camaraderie that defined his tenure, noting that he would miss the collective effort that turned practice into game‑day magic, and he took the opportunity to thank the entire East Longmeadow baseball community for its steadfast support.

He concluded by expressing pride in the players’ conduct on and off the field, underscoring the belief that being great people is the ultimate legacy of any coach.
