When Major League Baseball introduced Statcast in 2015, it transformed the sport from a game of anecdotal observation to one driven by precise, machine‑generated data.
At its core, Statcast records every ball in flight and every movement on the field, capturing details such as exit velocity, launch angle, and the exact point of contact between bat and ball.
One of the most talked‑about concepts is the ‘hard‑hit ball’, defined as any batted ball that leaves the bat at 95 mph or higher. This threshold helps analysts separate merely solid contact from truly powerful swings.
Equally important is the launch angle sweet spot, which researchers have found to lie between eight and 32 degrees. Balls released within this window tend to travel the farthest, influencing how hitters aim to shape their swings.
Statcast also generates probabilistic measures like xBA, or expected batting average, which estimates the likelihood that a given batted ball will become a hit based on its exit velocity and launch angle. Building on that, xwOBA adds sprint speed into the equation, reflecting how a runner’s speed can turn a routine hit into an extra‑base opportunity.
Another useful snapshot is EV50, which averages the hardest half of a batter’s batted balls or, conversely, the softest half of a pitcher’s allowed balls. This metric offers a quick gauge of a player’s typical contact quality.
Bat speed, measured at the bat’s sweet spot, is a key driver of exit velocity. A swing that registers 75 mph or more is generally classified as fast, and the faster the bat moves, the more energy is transferred to the ball.
The vertical component of that motion is captured as attack angle. When a ball is struck with an attack angle of five to twenty degrees, analysts label it an ‘Ideal Attack Angle’, a range that often correlates with optimal distance.
Beyond hitting, Statcast evaluates fielding with a metric called Jump, which highlights players who react fastest and take the most direct routes in the outfield. A ‘Bolt’ is recorded whenever a runner’s sprint speed reaches at least 30 ft/sec, underscoring elite baserunning.
Finally, xERA translates xwOBA into a familiar ERA scale, giving pitchers a more intuitive measure of the runs they allow per nine innings. Together, these metrics paint a comprehensive picture of performance that goes far beyond traditional stats.
