The race to 1,000 wins: High school football programs on the brink

A select group of teams are closing in on a historic milestone as the 2026 season kicks off

The pursuit of 1,000 career victories remains one of the most celebrated milestones in high school football, and this season a select group of programs are poised to join that exclusive club. USA TODAY’s latest rankings highlight the ten teams that sit closest to the threshold, blending historic pedigree with recent dominance.

Programs on the brink of history

At the top of the list, Valdosta (Ga.) leads with 977 wins, the nearest of any school to the 1,000‑win mark. The Wildcats closed the 2025 campaign with a 12‑2 record and will open the 2026 season on the road at Jones County on August 21. Not far behind, Massillon Washington (Ohio) sits at 968 victories after finishing 2025 at 9‑4, and the Tigers will host Glenville on August 21 to kick off their next chapter.

In Kentucky, both Male (Ky.) and Mayfield (Ky.) are tied at 965 wins. Male opened its season early, hosting Bowling Green on August 14, while Mayfield travels to Graves County on August 21. Highlands (Ky.) holds 953 wins and has posted double‑digit victories in each of the past three seasons, beginning its schedule on August 28 against Cooper.

Texas’ Highland Park and Pennsylvania’s Mount Carmel share 912 wins, with Highland Park finishing 12‑2 last year and set to open at home versus Lewisville on August 28. Mount Carmel, now past the 900‑win milestone, will start at North Schuylkill on August 23. Muskegon (Mich.) became the first Michigan program to surpass 910 wins, opening its season at home against Grandville on August 28. Easton (Pa.) boasts 903 wins and back‑to‑back 10‑plus win seasons, slated to begin on August 28 at Central Bucks West. Finally, Haynesville (La.) sits at 896 wins after an undefeated 14‑0 run in 2025, with its title defense slated for September 4 at home against Ouachita Christian.

These programs illustrate how tradition, community support, and sustained excellence converge to chase a milestone that captures the imagination of players, coaches, and fans alike. As the new season unfolds, each game adds another chapter to a narrative that has defined high school football for generations.
