The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, once a conduit for Division 1 talent, now sees only a handful of prospects progress beyond Division 3, while the majority of elite talent funnels into private programs.
The ripple effect is stark. At Newton South, a single year saw one‑third of the team transfer, normalizing the practice even among junior‑varsity athletes. Corey Lowe, a former player and coach who championed a collective team culture, watched his own aspirations crumble when he accepted a coaching position at a private school, describing the move as a loss of the community he once helped build.
