A sprawling indictment
A court in the United Kingdom has heard that thirteen men have been charged in connection with the prolonged abuse of a woman who was allegedly drugged by her husband. The case, which spans more than two decades, has drawn attention because of the diverse backgrounds of the accused, ranging from a senior paramedic to a former football club chief executive.
The main defendant
At the centre of the proceedings is a Stockport resident who faces a litany of serious offences, including rape and sexual assault. Prosecutors say he systematically assaulted his wife over a period of twenty years, and he is scheduled to go on trial in September. He has already admitted to fifteen counts while denying thirty‑three others.
Co‑defendants and their pleas
The remaining twelve defendants include a 59‑year‑old from Dundee, a 43‑year‑old senior paramedic from Stockport, a 58‑year‑old taxi driver, a 37‑year‑old metal worker, and a 31‑year‑old dog walker, among others. Some of them are accused of directly participating in the abuse, while others are alleged to have encouraged the crimes online.
Pleas have varied. Keith Fotheringham, 59, from Dundee, pleaded guilty to multiple charges and was remanded in custody. Jonathan Kirk, 43, the paramedic, has denied three counts. Philip Wild, 58, the taxi driver, has denied five charges. Sean Peers, 37, has denied two counts. Jordan Wallace, 31, has denied three counts. Alan Keelan, 42, a junior football coach, has denied three charges. Robert Stewart, 70, a DJ, has pleaded not guilty to three counts. Mohammed Sabir, 28, a recruiter, has denied four counts. Graham Brougham, 73, from Cheshire, has pleaded not guilty to three counts. Richard Townsend, 37, a metal worker from Heywood, has pleaded not guilty to two charges. Karl Lindsay, 55, from Taunton, denied three charges and resigned as chief executive of Taunton Town FC. David Graves, 59, from Ilkeston, has pleaded not guilty to three counts. Daniel Rayner, 42, from Whitstable, has denied three charges.
