Thomas Eshelman Takes the Helm as TCU Pitching Coach
TCU baseball announced this week that Thomas Eshelman will serve as its new pitching coach, stepping into the role vacated by longtime assistant Dave Lawn, who retired after a distinguished tenure.
Eshelman brings a blend of playing excellence and coaching acumen that has made him a respected figure in the game. After a stellar college career at Cal State Fullerton, where he set a school record with a 1.65 career ERA and earned three All‑American honors, he moved through the minor leagues before establishing himself as a reliable arm in the majors.
His professional journey included a four‑year stint as a pitching coach with the San Diego Padres, where he helped develop a pipeline of young talent, and a senior role in the Baltimore Orioles’ player development system, overseeing upper‑level pitchers.
TCU head coach Kirk Saarloos, who recruited Eshelman to the program, highlighted the hire as a strategic move to elevate the Horned Frogs’ pitching staff. “Thomas’s experience at the highest levels of the sport, combined with his deep roots in Texas baseball, makes him the ideal person to continue building on the program’s tradition of excellence,” Saarloos said.
