A Weekend of Skill, Laughter, and Memories
Thompson High School in Alabama recently hosted a two‑day basketball camp that welcomed children from kindergarten through sixth grade, aiming to introduce fundamental skills while keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable.
Head coach Major Deacon, together with the school’s men’s and women’s staff and players, structured the camp around drills that covered ball handling, passing, shooting, dribbling and defensive techniques, repeatedly stressing that having fun was the primary objective.
To ensure younger participants could experience success, the organizers placed lower hoops on the court, allowing kids to feel the thrill of making a basket and maintaining enthusiasm among the youngest attendees.
Deacon reflected on the nostalgic value of working with youth players, noting that it reminded him of his own early coaching days at the YMCA and reinforced his commitment to fostering a love of the game from the ground up.
