West Texas A&M Athletics announced Thursday that Thompson Mayberry has been appointed to the newly created position of Associate Athletic Director and General Manager for Football. The move is part of a broader effort to expand the Buffalo Football program’s revenue streams, enhance fundraising, and strengthen operational efficiency.
A Strategic Leap for Buffalo Football
In this role, Mayberry will oversee initiatives such as name, image and likeness (NIL) programs, donor engagement, and the management of team travel and recruiting operations. His mandate is to translate corporate relationships into tangible support for the program, ensuring that student‑athletes have the resources needed to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics.
Mayberry previously served as Associate Athletic Director for Corporate Relations, where he cultivated partnerships and managed sponsorships for the university. A proud alumnus of WTAMU’s football team, he brings deep ties to the Amarillo‑Canyon community and an intimate understanding of the campus culture that he hopes to leverage in his new responsibilities.
Community Roots and Institutional Vision
Doug Lipinski, Vice President of Athletics, praised Mayberry’s passion for WTAMU and his proven ability to build relationships that benefit the program. "Thompson’s appointment reflects our commitment to investing in the Buffalo Football brand and providing the support structure necessary for sustained success," Lipinski said in the announcement.
Mayberry will transition into the new role immediately, bringing his corporate relations experience and community connections to bear on the program’s strategic goals. University leaders say the appointment underscores West Texas A&M’s dedication to elevating its athletic offerings while maintaining a focus on student‑athlete development and operational excellence.
