Three members of the Appalachian State field hockey program have been recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) for their outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom. The honor places them among a select group of student‑athletes who meet rigorous academic and athletic standards.
Academic Excellence Meets Athletic Success
To qualify for the CSC Academic All‑District team, a student‑athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, and satisfy specific playing requirements. Each of the honorees not only met these criteria but also contributed significantly to their team’s recent successes.
Claire Grenis, a team captain, recorded four shutouts during the season and finished fourth nationally in goals‑against average with 79 saves. She graduated with a master’s degree in geography and achieved a 3.9 GPA, underscoring her commitment to both research and sport.
Sarah Perkins, also a captain, scored one goal and added three assists, helping the Mountaineers secure their first postseason victory under head coach Emily Dinsmore. Perkins earned a biology degree with a 3.89 GPA, balancing a demanding science curriculum with a pivotal role on the field.
Calista Schwartz contributed three assists, including two during a three‑game stretch, and played internationally for the FIH Junior World Cup alongside Riley Novak. She maintained a 3.85 GPA and earned repeated dean’s and chancellor’s list honors, reflecting her consistent academic performance.
Leadership and Legacy
Beyond individual statistics, the trio exemplifies leadership that extends beyond the pitch. Their achievements have helped elevate the program’s profile, fostering a culture where athletic ambition and scholarly rigor are pursued in tandem. The recognition also highlights the supportive environment cultivated by coaches and academic mentors alike.
