Tiara Johnson Takes the Helm of Niagara’s Women’s Basketball Program

A seasoned coach with deep regional roots returns to lead the Purple Eagles

A New Era for the Purple Eagles

Niagara University announced today that Tiara Johnson will assume the role of head coach for the women's basketball program, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record of program building. Her appointment signals a strategic move to sustain the momentum the Purple Eagles have built over recent seasons.

Johnson arrives with more than 15 years of collegiate coaching experience, most recently as Associate Head Coach at St. Bonaventure University. There, she helped the Bonnies improve by 11 wins in the 2025‑26 season and secure their first postseason appearance in a decade, a milestone that underscores her ability to elevate program performance.

During her tenure at St. Bonaventure, Johnson oversaw the operational budget, led staff hiring and supervision, and served as the primary liaison for marketing, facilities, and events. Her contributions were instrumental in the program’s two consecutive 20‑win seasons, including a second‑round NCAA Tournament run in 2016 and a WNIT appearance in 2014.

Prior to St. Bonaventure, Johnson spent seven seasons at Providence College, rising to the rank of lead assistant coach. As defensive coordinator, she helped the Friars place among the top four defenses in the Big East for four straight years. Under her guidance, the team reached the WNIT Sweet 16 in 2019, and 13 of her players earned Academic All‑Conference honors.

Johnson’s influence extends beyond the hardwood. She has mentored athletes who have pursued professional careers in Austria, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the EuroLeague, demonstrating her capacity to prepare talent for high‑level competition.

A scholar‑practitioner, Johnson holds a Master of Arts in Strategic Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing and Sports Management from St. Bonaventure University. She is an inaugural member of the WBCA Next Generation Institute (2023) and a graduate of the Brian Stanchak Head Coaching Training Center (2021).

Before her coaching career, Johnson was a standout player at St. Bonaventure, contributing to the 2009 and 2010 WNIT squads. She began her collegiate journey at North Central Missouri College, where she was later inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025.

University officials expressed confidence that Johnson’s blend of strategic vision, operational expertise, and player development will propel the Purple Eagles to new heights. "We are excited to welcome a leader who understands the culture of our program and is committed to excellence on and off the court," a senior administrator said in the announcement.
