A violent episode shakes Mexican baseball
The Liga Mexicana de Beisbol (LMB) announced an indefinite suspension for Danry Vasquez of the Tijuana Toros following a shocking assault on Rodolfo Amador of the Acereros de Monclova. The incident, which unfolded in the fourth inning of a regular‑season matchup, quickly escalated into a full‑scale bench‑clearing brawl that involved multiple players from both clubs.
According to eyewitness accounts, Vasquez was tagged out by Amador and reacted by striking the veteran with a series of punches and kicks while Amador lay on the ground. The aggression prompted immediate intervention from teammates, umpire Gustavo Pena, and team officials, who ejected Vasquez, Adonis Medina, Ryan Hernandez, and Jecksson Flores.
The physical altercation left Amador with a fractured arm. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed the injury and began treatment. The sight of a player being carried off on a stretcher added a somber tone to an already chaotic scene.
This is not the first time Vasquez has been linked to violent conduct. In 2016 he was arrested for assault causing bodily injury to a family member; he later completed a diversion program and avoided jail time. Following that domestic‑violence episode, the Houston Astros' Double‑A affiliate released him, and he has not returned to affiliated baseball since.
Vasquez's professional journey has taken him across several leagues. He has suited up for five different LMB clubs and spent time in Venezuela's winter circuit with teams such as Leones del Caracas and Tiburones de La Guaira. Earlier in 2024 he served a one‑game suspension after a separate incident during a playoff series between the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos and Monclova.
The LMB's decision to impose an indefinite ban underscores the league's growing intolerance for on‑field violence. While the punishment aims to protect players like Amador, it also reflects broader concerns about player behavior, safety protocols, and the need for stricter enforcement of conduct codes across Mexican baseball.
