Tim Duryea, a fixture of college basketball sidelines for more than three decades, has called time on his coaching career, bringing to a close a tenure that began long before his recent eight‑year stretch at Boise State.
Duryea’s path has been marked by stops at several institutions, including Utah State, Hutchinson Community College, North Texas and Colorado State, where he amassed a record that features 171 wins, six 20‑win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
A career defined by consistency and growth
At Boise State, his influence was most pronounced. Under his guidance the Broncos captured the 2021‑22 Mountain West regular‑season and tournament titles, and secured a trio of NCAA Tournament berths, underscoring the program’s rise during his tenure.
The coach also mentored a handful of standout players who earned all‑conference recognition, among them Tyson Degenhart and Derrick Alston Jr., who credit Duryea with shaping their development.
Beyond the wins, Duryea’s career is defined by a consistency that few can match. He finished his journey with eight conference championships and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, a testament to his ability to rebuild and sustain competitive teams across diverse programs.
Colleagues and former players alike have praised his leadership. Former Utah State head coach Leon Rice, who overlapped with Duryea during his time at the university, highlighted the mentor’s impact on player growth and program culture.
As the basketball community processes the news, many are already speculating about potential successors and the next chapter for the Broncos. Whatever the future holds, Duryea’s legacy will remain etched in the programs he helped elevate.
