Tim Small, who guided Williamsport High’s football program for eleven seasons, announced his resignation from the coaching staff earlier this week, citing a county administrative opening created by a transfer.
Small’s stewardship produced a program‑record 57 victories, including seven playoff appearances and two trips to the state quarterfinals in MPSSAA Class 2A‑1A competition.
Reflecting on his decision, Small said the move was driven by a transfer opportunity that opened an administrative role, and he expressed confidence that the team’s momentum would continue under interim head coach Joe Austin.
Interim Leadership and Staff Continuity
Austin, who has served as an assistant for several years, will lead the Wildcats for the 2025 season, inheriting a coaching staff that includes longtime assistants Mike Rechtorovic, Anthony Cleary, Josh Snow and Marty Spruce.
The Wildcats closed the previous season with a 6‑4 record, underscoring the program’s recent upward trajectory and the depth of talent cultivated over the past decade.
Beyond the field, Small noted the broader growth of football in Washington County, citing Boonsboro’s recent Class 1A state semifinal run and the rising profile of North Hagerstown as evidence of a vibrant local landscape.
Although stepping away from the sidelines, Small said he will remain engaged with county football developments from an administrative perspective, keeping a close eye on the program’s future.
