A Homecoming for a Viking Alum

North Park University has named Tyshaun “TJ” Cobbs as its new assistant basketball coach, tapping a former standout player who helped the Vikings capture a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship and earn All‑Conference honors as a senior.

Cobbs spent four seasons (2013‑2017) as a varsity player at North Park, where his contributions were pivotal in the team’s conference title run and his reputation for fundamentals and leadership began to take shape.

His coaching journey began as a varsity assistant at Alan B. Shepard High School, continued as associate head coach at St. Laurence High School, and in 2022 led the Oak Forest High School boys varsity team, further honing his ability to develop student‑athletes.

Coach Ed McGhee, who has watched Cobbs’ growth from player to mentor, praised his capacity to connect with people and instill discipline, noting that Cobbs’ emphasis on fundamentals and leadership aligns perfectly with the program’s goals.

Beyond the court, Cobbs holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from North Park and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in special education at Liberty University, underscoring his commitment to holistic student development.

Expressing excitement about returning to his alma mater, Cobbs said he looks forward to contributing to the program’s success and mentoring the next generation of Vikings.
