TJ Shook, a University of South Carolina graduate, has earned a spot on the Colorado Rockies roster, becoming the 61st Gamecock to reach the Major Leagues.
A Draft Story That Took an Unusual Turn
Selected in the Triple‑A segment of last year’s Rule 5 draft, Shook’s path to the big leagues was anything but straightforward. After signing with the Rockies organization, he climbed the minor‑league ladder, posting a 2‑0 record, a 2.86 ERA and seven saves across 28.1 innings for the Albuquerque Isotopes in the Pacific Coast League.
His professional résumé also includes stints with the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets systems, giving him a breadth of experience that the Rockies hope will translate into reliable relief work.
What the Numbers Say
In 22 appearances this season, Shook has struck out 92 batters over 74 collegiate innings and maintained a 3.04 ERA at South Carolina, where he helped the Gamecocks reach a Super Regional in 2018. The 6‑1 record and 92 strikeouts underscore a trajectory that began with a strong college career and has continued to mature in the minors.
Beyond the statistics, Shook’s off‑field contributions earned him three selections to the SEC Spring Honor Roll and a spot on the SEC Community Service Team in 2019, highlighting a well‑rounded profile that the Rockies value.
Looking Ahead
Shook is currently in the middle of a three‑game series against the Los Angeles Angels, and the Rockies will host the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend at Coors Field. The upcoming matchups present a chance for him to further cement his place in the major‑league conversation.
