The University of Toledo’s men’s basketball program has once again been honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Award, marking the eighth consecutive year the Rockets have earned this distinction.
The award, which recognizes teams that maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher across the roster, underscores the program’s commitment to balancing athletic competition with scholarly achievement.
A Conference Leader in Academic Accolades
Within the Mid-American Conference, the Rockets stand at the pinnacle of academic recognition, having amassed eleven such awards — more than any other school in the league. Western Michigan trails with eight awards, while Central Michigan follows with four.
The NABC’s criteria are strict: only teams that meet the GPA threshold and demonstrate consistent academic progress are eligible, a standard that the Rockets have consistently surpassed season after season.
Beyond the team honor, two senior players, Sean Craig and Sonny Wilson, have been selected to the NABC Honors Court, a distinction reserved for juniors, seniors, and graduate students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Both Craig and Wilson exemplify the blend of on‑court talent and classroom dedication that the program prizes, reflecting a culture where academic excellence is viewed as integral to athletic success.
