The annual Hamilton Heights Prayer Breakfast gathered students, teachers and community members in the school's café, a modest setting that belied the significance of the gathering.
A Legend Returns to His Roots
Tom Abernethy, a standout member of Indiana University's 1976 undefeated Hoosiers squad and a former NBA guard who later played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers, took the stage to share stories from a career that spanned two decades.
After hanging up his sneakers, Abernethy turned his focus to nurturing the next generation of players, establishing the Indiana Basketball Academy in 1996. The academy has since become a hub for youth development, offering mentorship, training and life lessons that extend beyond the hardwood.
The event was organized by the Heights Area Pastors in partnership with the Hamilton Heights Education Foundation. Superintendent Derek Arrowood and Melissa Martin, president of the foundation, joined Abernethy on stage, underscoring the collaborative spirit that drives the community's educational and spiritual initiatives.
Attendees said the breakfast offered more than a meal; it provided a moment of reflection and inspiration, reminding participants that success is measured not only by trophies but also by the impact one makes on others.
