Tom Marker, a sixth‑grade math teacher and former Olentangy Orange baseball coach, announced his retirement after seven winning seasons, choosing to focus on his classroom duties.
During his tenure the team compiled a 158‑53 record, reached the state tournament twice and captured two regional titles, a run that included a 2023 state final loss to Cincinnati Moeller and a 2024 semifinal defeat to Cincinnati St. Xavier.
Marker, who has taught at Olentangy Berlin Middle School since 2023 after stints at Whitehall‑Yearling, Bexley Middle School, Upper Arlington and Orange Middle School, said the decision was driven by work‑related reasons that forced him to prioritize teaching.
He highlighted the supportive environment, noting the quality of facilities, the dedication of the coaching staff and the involvement of parents as key factors in the program’s success.
A lasting impact
Among the players he mentored, Charlie Scholvin emerged as a standout, earning a 15th‑round selection by the Minnesota Twins in the 2026 MLB Draft, while his brother Maverick committed to Bowling Green State University.
The school community, including fellow coaches and administrators, praised Marker’s contributions, with former head coach Phil Callaghan recalling the transition from Callaghan’s own 173‑56 record that set a high bar for future leaders.
Beyond the field, Marker’s career reflects a commitment to both education and athletics, a dual path he plans to continue while remaining involved in the sport at the community level.
