Southwestern Illinois College Names Tom Minnick as Inaugural Head Coach
The Southwestern Illinois College Board of Trustees announced this week that Tom Minnick has been selected to guide the college’s inaugural football program, which will make its debut in the fall of 2027. The team will join a tiny elite group of only two community college football programs in Illinois and will compete as an independent in NJCAA Division I.
Minnick will operate out of the college’s Belleville campus, where home games are slated for the West Main Street facility. The venue recently received a brand‑new artificial turf field and includes on‑site athlete dormitories designed to support student‑athletes both on and off the field.
With a career spanning multiple junior colleges, Minnick brings a 132‑51 overall record and a reputation for building competitive, disciplined programs. He previously coached at Highland Community College, Joliet Junior College, Arizona Western College and Garden City Community College before earning induction into the NJCAA Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2021.
Beyond wins and losses, Minnick emphasizes mentorship, leadership development and the teaching of life lessons through the sport. He says the program will be structured around recruiting promising talent while instilling values of teamwork, accountability and academic success.
