A legendary era ends
Tom Moore, a four‑time national champion and longtime architect of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball program, revealed this week that he will step away from his role after nearly forty years of service.
Moore’s departure marks the close of a chapter that saw the Huskies capture back‑to‑back NCAA titles in 2023 and 2024, adding to earlier championships in 1999 and 2004 that he helped secure as an assistant to Jim Calhoun.
During his second stint at UConn from 2018 to 2026, Moore served as general manager and oversaw the recruitment of standout talents such as Donovan Clingan, Andre Jackson and Alex Karaban, contributions that helped shape the team’s recent dominance.
His influence extended beyond the bench; he played a pivotal role in landing future NBA draft picks including Ray Allen, Khalid El‑Amin, Rip Hamilton, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor and Rudy Gay, many of whom flourished under his guidance.
Before joining UConn in 1994, Moore honed his craft at Worcester State University and spent a decade as head coach at Quinnipiac, where he earned NEC Coach of the Year honors in 2010 and guided the Bobcats into the MAAC.
Reflecting on his career, Moore cited the relationships forged with players, coaches and the broader basketball community as the most rewarding aspect of his journey, and expressed confidence that the program will continue to thrive under new leadership.
The university announced that a formal farewell ceremony will be scheduled later this month, inviting alumni, staff and fans to celebrate Moore’s indelible mark on Connecticut basketball.
