A New Era for the Stingrays
Tony Gilbert, a former NFL linebacker and SEC standout, was introduced this week as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Atlantic Coast Stingrays, a franchise hungry for its first winning season since 2021.
Gilbert’s football journey began at the University of Georgia, where he earned second‑team All‑SEC honors in 2002 after a standout college career. He then spent eight years in the NFL, most notably with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Atlanta Falcons, before moving into coaching.
His coaching résumé includes stints as defensive coordinator for the Stingrays, positions at several SEC and ACC programs, and a recent role with the Jacksonville Jaguars, giving him intimate knowledge of the team’s personnel and scheme.
The Stingrays finished the 2025 season at 4‑6, missing the playoffs, but Gilbert believes the experience gained can be leveraged to build a more competitive roster and a culture of victory.
Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as Gilbert prepares to implement his vision, hoping his blend of playing toughness and strategic acumen will translate into on‑field success.
Looking Forward
With the offseason underway, Gilbert is already engaging with players, scouting staff and shaping the team’s playbook, signaling a proactive approach to turning the franchise’s fortunes around.
