A Recruiting Battle for the No. 2 Prospect
Maxwell Hiller, the top interior offensive lineman and the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2027 class, remains the only five‑star recruit yet to announce his college destination as August approaches.
The Florida Gators have already secured 26 commitments, including 12 athletes ranked inside the top 200, and sit at No. 9 nationally. Hiller pledged to the Gators in April, but he has yet to take an official visit to any other campus.
LSU and Tennessee, however, are mounting the most aggressive campaigns to flip the Pennsylvania native. In a recent interview with On3’s Corey Bender, Hiller said he hears from the Tigers and Volunteers more than any other program.
Both schools are leveraging their recent on‑field successes and coaching connections to sway the recruit. LSU’s 2024 class currently ranks No. 10 nationally and features standouts such as offensive tackle Terrance Smith, while Tennessee recently added five‑star running back David Gabriel Georges, beating out Ohio State for his signature.
Hiller has hinted at scheduling visits to other institutions during the upcoming season, though a concrete timeline has not emerged. Analysts expect his recruitment to stay active well into the Early Signing Period in December.
The final decision will reverberate through the rankings of the contending programs, potentially reshaping the top tier of next year’s recruiting classes.
Implications for the Power Five
Should Hiller choose a program outside the traditional powerhouses, the ripple effect could elevate that school’s national perception and alter the balance of power in the SEC and Big Ten.
Conversely, a commitment to Florida would reinforce the Gators’ upward trajectory under head coach Jon Sumrall, who has already guided the team to a strong start this season.
