More than 800 high school and college programs across the nation received the same academic accolade, but the Toreros stood out by being one of only 133 NCAA Division I institutions recognized. Their achievement underscores a culture where scholarly performance is given equal weight to athletic competition.
On-Field Excellence Complements Classroom Success
The team's competitive edge was evident as seven players earned 2026 All-West Coast Conference honors, highlighting their impact in the league. Catcher Jayden Lobliner added another layer of prestige by securing the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season.
Lobliner's defensive prowess and pitcher Diego Gutierrez's performance translated into professional opportunities, with both athletes selected in the 2026 MLB Draft. The St. Louis Cardinals chose Lobliner in the ninth round, while the Baltimore Orioles selected Gutierrez in the 17th round.
Beyond individual accolades, the program celebrated a historic milestone for head coach Ungricht, who recorded his 150th career victory in May. Under his guidance, the Toreros have captured two West Coast Conference regular-season titles, two tournament championships, and earned multiple NCAA Tournament berths since 2021.
Seventeen Toreros have now been named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic list during Ungricht's tenure, reflecting a sustained commitment to developing student-athletes who excel both on the diamond and in the classroom.
