The Toronto Sceptres have named their initial trio of protected athletes as the Professional Women’s Hockey League prepares for its next expansion cycle.
Renata Fast, Raygan Kirk and Ella Shelton will carry the franchise’s early roster commitments, signaling the team’s intent to anchor its core as the league grows.
Veteran forward Daryl Watts, who had been anticipated as a protected name, instead opted to test free agency, signing a four‑year deal with PWHL Detroit, a move that marks the first such contract in league history.
General manager Gina Kingsbury acknowledged Watts’ choice, expressing understanding and emphasizing the exciting prospects that expansion brings for both players and staff.
Expansion Outlook
Kingsbury noted that the Sceptres will continue to evaluate talent and will have the opportunity to protect three additional skaters in the forthcoming phase of the expansion process.
