A massive summer outlay
Tottenham Hotspur have already laid out £237 million in the current transfer window, a figure that underscores the club’s ambition to rebuild after a turbulent season. The spending spree has brought six new faces to the capital, among them midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, both of whom arrived on permanent deals.
The club also said goodbye to several experienced players, including Yves Bissouma and Randal Kolo Muani, as part of a broader effort to reshape the roster and free up space for younger talent.
Regulatory hurdles
Premier League regulations cap the number of non‑homegrown players at 17 per squad, yet Tottenham’s current list contains 20 such players, forcing the club to consider drastic reductions before the next registration deadline.
Adding to the complexity, UEFA’s European competition rules demand a minimum of eight locally trained players on the A‑List, a threshold that the north‑London side has struggled to meet in recent campaigns.
Domestically, the club benefits from a generous interpretation of the Under‑21 rule, which exempts players born on or after 1 January 2005 from the 25‑man list. All of the summer signings are older than that cut‑off, meaning they must be counted among the senior non‑homegrown contingent.
On the homegrown front, Tottenham can point to eight players who qualify under the league’s definition, among them Dane Scarlett and Kevin Danso, the latter of whom satisfies the homegrown criterion despite being born abroad.
The UEFA A‑List also distinguishes between club‑trained and association‑trained talent. At present, Tottenham has recorded only one senior player who meets the club‑trained definition, but prospects such as Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall could add to that tally from the 2027‑28 season onward.
If the club manages to re‑enter European competition next term, the squad will need to be trimmed to the 25‑player limit, a move that could see several of the newly signed internationals depart or be loaned out.
