A somber day at Camp Nou
A construction worker lost his life on Thursday while performing renovation duties inside Barcelona's iconic Camp Nou stadium. The 54‑year‑old suffered a fatal blow to the head during the works, and despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Barcelona Football Club released a statement expressing its deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends and colleagues, acknowledging the profound loss of a dedicated member of the construction crew.
The tragedy marks a dark chapter in the stadium's ambitious transformation, a project that began in 2023 with the aim of expanding and modernising Europe's largest arena. The overhaul is intended to increase the venue's capacity to 105,000 spectators, reaffirming its status as the continent's biggest football stadium.
Following the incident, players have resumed training at the venue, though matches will be played with a restricted audience until the refurbishment is completed. The club's first home fixture at the partially reopened stadium is scheduled for August 27 against Athletic Bilbao.
Camp Nou's upcoming debut under the new configuration will be closely watched, not only for its sporting implications but also as a symbolic moment for the club and its supporters after two consecutive La Liga titles.
