A wave of jubilation swept through Mexico City on Sunday night as fans celebrated Mexico’s dramatic victory over Ecuador in the World Cup, flooding the streets with more than a million revelers.
The festivities turned tragic when three revelers collapsed near the iconic Angel of Independence monument, their bodies found unconscious and later pronounced dead from asphyxiation. A fourth supporter succumbed after a sudden seizure, his heart and lungs stopping in a matter of minutes.
A City on Edge
Mayor Clara Brugada took to social media and press briefings to urge citizens to celebrate responsibly, suggesting alternative gatherings to ease the strain on streets already packed with an estimated 1.4 million people.
Authorities warned that the sheer density of the crowd had turned public spaces into hazardous zones, with emergency services stretched thin and the city’s Health Secretariat mobilizing additional resources to address the crisis.
