Authorities responded to a call at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, finding the vehicle of 18‑year‑old Karoline Heintz parked near the California Public Library in California, Pennsylvania. Inside, officers discovered the student with a fatal stab wound to the chest.
Heintz, a first‑year student at PennWest California and a member of the university’s soccer team, had been reported missing after she failed to check in with her family as planned earlier that day. The discovery prompted a swift 911 call and the mobilization of local law enforcement.
Investigators quickly identified her boyfriend, 18‑year‑old Royce Moser of Beallsville, as a person of interest. Moser was taken into custody and charged with homicide for the alleged stabbing that led to Heintz’s death.
During the course of the interrogation, police uncovered a second layer of alleged involvement: Moser’s mother, Rachel Moser, faced additional charges of hindering apprehension, tampering and obstruction. Prosecutors say she assisted in moving the body and attempting to clean the crime scene.

A local resident described Heintz as “the sweetest girl,” noting her inclusive spirit and the positive impact she had on teammates and classmates alike. The loss has left friends, neighbors and fellow students grappling with shock and grief.
