A Community in Mourning
On a Saturday afternoon in early June, the calm waters of Lake Michigan near the south pier of the Pigeon Lake Channel turned deadly when a group of friends found themselves in distress.
A 24‑year‑old man began struggling in the surf, prompting several companions to dive in, while a 26‑year‑old also entered the water. Rescue teams pulled both men from the lake, but they were later pronounced dead.
Remembering Their Legacy
Philip LoChirco, 24, of Warrenville, Illinois, and Jalen Shaffer, 26, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, were both former football players at Wheaton College, having each completed multiple seasons on the gridiron before graduating in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
LoChirco also served as an assistant coach at Wheaton Academy, where athletic director Brad Byrne praised his dedication and the lasting impact he had on students.
Wheaton College head coach Jesse Scott remembered the pair as men of deep faith whose influence extended far beyond the football field, shaping teammates and peers alike.
The tragedy has prompted local officials to re‑emphasize water‑safety guidelines, urging swimmers to wear life‑preservers and stay within designated swimming zones.
Friends, alumni and community members have organized vigils, sharing stories of the men’s commitment to their sport, their studies and their Christian faith, a testament to the imprint they left on those who knew them.
