Former Fairleigh Dickinson University basketball standout Kinu Rochford was gunned down on a Saturday afternoon at a Harlem basketball tournament, an event meant to bring together local players and fans for a day of friendly competition.
Two other participants were wounded in the same burst of gunfire, and emergency responders rushed them to nearby hospitals where they received treatment for non‑life‑threatening injuries.
The New York Police Department has opened a homicide investigation and is offering a $3,500 reward for anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest, hoping the incentive will coax witnesses out of the shadows.
Eden Rochford, Kinu’s mother, has been publicly pleading for anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward, describing the loss as an irreparable void that no amount of money can fill.
Rochford, who also worked as an intake counselor for homeless families in Brooklyn, was remembered by colleagues as a compassionate advocate who always tried to lift others up, even as he pursued his love of the game.
A Local Organization’s Role
The tournament was organized by Win, a New York‑based nonprofit that uses sports to mentor youth and promote community cohesion. Win’s staff said they are cooperating fully with investigators and are determined to honor the fallen by continuing their mission.
Christine Quinn, a longtime community activist and former city council speaker, visited the scene alongside family members, urging residents to break the code of silence that often protects perpetrators.

Friends and former teammates recall Kinu’s relentless work ethic on the court and his gentle demeanor off it, noting that he often spent evenings volunteering at local shelters, teaching kids how to dribble and how to dream.
