Jackson County Judge Ashlee Cole, whose son was among the friends on the vessel, recounted that she last saw Wells around 3 p.m. on July 4, when the party was preparing to leave. She explained that the boat began taking on water shortly thereafter, prompting the group to head back toward the shore.
According to Cole, Wells chose to remain on the island and later rejoined another cluster of friends inland, a decision that would prove fatal.

A grainy video that has emerged appears to capture a heated exchange near the shoreline moments before Wells vanished, prompting the Jackson County Sheriff's Department to appeal for anyone who witnessed or heard unusual activity that afternoon to come forward.
Sheriff John Ledbetter emphasized the urgency of the appeal, noting that the investigation is still piecing together the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
Medical Findings and Ongoing Inquiry
Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. confirmed that Wells' identity was verified through dental records, while a post‑mortem examination is underway, though results from the medical examiner's office remain pending.
The Wells family has retained civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump to pursue answers and to ensure transparency throughout the investigative process.
