A promising career cut short
The night of July 31 turned tragic for the Jackson State community when former defensive back Levi Wyatt, 23, was killed in a single‑vehicle crash just after 11:40 p.m. near the intersection of North State Street and Belhaven Street in Jackson, Mississippi. His car left the roadway, overturned and struck a light pole, causing his death at the scene.
Local authorities, including the Hinds County Coroner’s Office, responded to the wreck and confirmed the circumstances of the accident. The coroner’s office has taken charge of the investigation, working to piece together the factors that led to the collision.
Jackson State University released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of Wyatt, describing him as a brother to the team and emphasizing that his memory will endure within the football program. The university highlighted his dedication, his 12 tackles and four pass breakups during the 2025 season, and the impact he had on teammates and coaches.
Wyatt’s football journey began at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 2021 before he transferred to Jackson State, where he also spent a season at McNeese State. Hailing from Vicksburg, Mississippi, and graduating from Holmes County Central High School, he was known for his hard‑hitting style and for making key plays against rivals such as Alabama State, Florida A&M and Alcorn State.
Teammates and friends, including Jeremiah Howard and Tia Reid, have shared personal tributes, recalling his work ethic and the camaraderie he fostered in the locker room. Their messages reflect a broader outpouring of grief that extends beyond the campus to the wider Mississippi community.
