The University of Kentucky announced the death of Nic Smith, a 55‑year‑old redshirt freshman defensive lineman, sending condolences to his family and the broader campus community.
A season cut short
Smith arrived on campus as a three‑star prospect from Loganville, Georgia, in the class of 2025, joining the Wildcats as a defensive lineman while pursuing a degree in community and leadership development.
Coach Will Stein described the loss as a tremendous blow to the program, noting that Smith’s dedication in practice and his potential impact on the team’s future were cut short before he ever took the field.
Smith was the son of Spencer and Kisha Smith and Genedra Smalls, and he grew up alongside siblings Jackson Roundtree, Killik Smith, Arkeion Smith, Nedra Roundtree, Valencia Murray and Ariana Smith, a close‑knit family that often attended games.
Remembering the legacy
Though he did not appear in a game during his redshirt year, teammates and staff recall his relentless work ethic and the optimism he brought to the locker room, qualities that will shape the program’s culture moving forward.
The university’s athletic department and academic advisors highlighted his commitment to both athletics and scholarship, underscoring the interdisciplinary approach he embraced as he prepared for a career in community development.
