A community in mourning
The small town of Alma Center, Wisconsin, was shaken this week when 17‑year‑old Adam Massman, a senior at Lincoln High School, died after sustaining a severe injury on the football field. Coaches and teammates described the moment he collapsed as a sudden, devastating turn that halted the game and sent shockwaves through the stands.
Massman was more than a quarterback; he was a multi‑sport athlete who also excelled in basketball, baseball and academics. In the 2025 season he amassed 858 passing yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 280 rushing yards and three scores on the ground, totaling 1,138 yards of total offense. His dedication earned him a place on the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s 2025 Boys Basketball Academic All‑State list, underscoring a balance of athletic prowess and scholarly achievement.
Friends and teammates have turned the school’s parking lot into a makeshift memorial, painting Massman’s spot with the words “Long Live Adam” alongside images that reflect his family and personal passions. Megan Steussel, a close friend, described him as “a friend, fierce competitor, and someone who followed his passions,” a sentiment echoed by many who knew him both on and off the field.
The Massman family is deeply rooted in Alma Center and Jackson County; his mother works as an elementary school counselor, and several relatives are employed within the local school district. In the wake of the tragedy, Steussel urged families to express love and appreciation to their children and friends while they can, emphasizing the fragile nature of youth and the importance of cherishing those connections.
