Victor Valley College is grappling with an abrupt loss after confirming that 20‑year‑old women's basketball standout Jheney Wallace died in a single‑vehicle collision on July 15.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Wallace’s Hyundai Veloster left the roadway on a steep embankment in Cajon Pass, overturning before coming to rest at the bottom of the slope.
The college’s athletics department released a statement describing her as more than a teammate, emphasizing her roles as a friend, daughter, sister, cousin and granddaughter.
A community in mourning
Brandon Henderson, her high school coach, recalled Wallace as a natural leader whose work ethic and positive attitude set her apart on and off the court.
Tamara Wallace, her mother, shared that her daughter dreamed of playing in the WNBA and described her as a great daughter, best friend and loving sister.
Fans, teammates and local residents have gathered to honor Wallace’s memory, reflecting on a career that promised a bright future in professional basketball.
Her story underscores the fragile nature of life and the enduring impact of a young athlete whose aspirations reached far beyond the hardwood.
