A Narrow Defeat in Midland
The Trailblazers of Americas High School traveled to Midland Legacy High School on Tuesday night to open the Class 5A, Division 1 UIL regional final against the defending state champions, Aledo.
Aledo struck first, with second baseman Landon Barnes launching a two‑run homer in the opening inning that put the Bearcats ahead 3‑0. The early onslaught set the tone, but the Texas squad kept the pressure on.
Starting pitcher Aiden Lester limited the damage, allowing only three runs through the first two innings and shutting out Aledo thereafter. His effort kept the game within reach for the visitors.
The turning point came in the sixth inning when Liam Esquivel delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Drew Gonzalez, cutting the deficit to 3‑2. The rally sparked hope among the Trailblazers' bench and fans.
Aledo’s relief pitcher Garhett Love then sealed the victory, retiring all three batters in the seventh inning without allowing a run. His composure under pressure proved decisive.
What Comes Next
Despite the 3‑2 loss, the Trailblazers left several runners on base in three other innings, underscoring both the offensive potential and the missed opportunities. The team now turns its focus to Game 2, scheduled to begin just 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
Coach Cortez De La Fuente praised his players' resilience, noting that the experience will inform their preparation for the next matchup. The series remains alive, and the next game could swing the momentum in a different direction.
