A Historic Season
Travis Hunter’s name now sits at the heart of Colorado’s sporting lore after being crowned the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, a feat that the state’s Hall of Fame has placed at No. 50 on its list of the top 150 moments in Colorado sports history.
The award recognized not only his statistical dominance but also the rarity of a player excelling at both receiver and cornerback at an elite level, a dual‑threat that reshaped expectations for modern college football.
Hunter finished the season with 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also intercepting four passes and breaking up 11 more on defense, numbers that helped the Buffaloes finish 9‑4 and tie for first in the Big 12.
His performance earned him eight major national awards, including the Walter Camp Award and Player of the Year honors from the Associated Press and Sporting News, cementing his place as the most decorated player in a single season in college football history.
The achievement marks only the second time a Colorado‑based athlete has captured the Heisman, the first being the legendary running back who preceded him, and it comes after Hunter followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State to Boulder, bringing a new wave of excitement to the program.
The Hall’s Selection Process
A committee of 19 media veterans, historians and former athletes, including Dave Logan, Woody Paige, Ron Zappolo, Susie Wargin, Jim Saccomano and Tim Simmons, reviewed more than 2,000 candidates before selecting the top 150, with Hunter’s Heisman moment standing among the elite tier of 50.
The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, an organization dedicated to preserving the state’s athletic heritage, oversaw the project that commemorates Colorado’s admission to the Union as the 38th state, highlighting moments that have shaped the region’s cultural identity.
Beyond the accolades, Hunter’s endurance and charismatic play have redefined what many thought possible in the modern game, leaving a lasting imprint on Colorado’s sports legacy.
