A Champion's Journey
In June, the Tremont Turks celebrated their first-ever baseball state championship, a triumph anchored by senior pitcher Keegan Smallwood, whose dominant performances helped secure the title.
Smallwood's path to the mound has been shaped by a childhood battle few can imagine. Diagnosed with leukemia at just two years old, he spent months under the care of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where groundbreaking treatment turned a grim prognosis into a story of survival.
Now a healthy 17‑year‑old, Smallwood credits the hospital's expertise and compassion for giving him the chance to pursue his athletic dreams. "St. Jude didn't just treat me; they saved my life," he said, emphasizing the profound impact the institution has had on his future.
