Tyler Junior College announced this week that Trevin Sonnier has been appointed as the fifth head baseball coach for the Apache program, bringing nearly a decade of collegiate coaching experience to the role.
A Proven Developer of Talent
Sonnier’s career has spanned several institutions, including Howard College, Abilene Christian University, Wright State University, Dallas Baptist University and Oral Roberts University, where he honed his ability to develop talent and guide teams to competitive success.
At Howard College, he transformed the program into a premier developmental pipeline, producing 41 players who continued at four‑year schools and earning multiple All‑Conference honors and postseason berths.
Before moving into coaching, Sonnier played college baseball at TCU, Panola College, Dallas Baptist University and Oral Roberts University, earning a spot on the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List in 2016 as one of the nation’s top shortstops.
His professional playing stint included time in the Chicago White Sox system and with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League, giving him a deep understanding of the game at both the amateur and semi‑pro levels.
He succeeds Brett Doe, who departed for Abilene Christian University after guiding TJC to a regional final appearance in the NJCAA Division I tournament in 2025, a run that underscored the program’s rising stature.
Athletic director Doug Wren praised Sonnier’s blend of playing pedigree and coaching acumen, stating that the hire aligns with the college’s ambition to sustain momentum and compete nationally.
Fans and alumni alike are eager to see how Sonnier will build on the foundation laid by Doe, with expectations that the Apaches will continue to attract top talent and contend for conference titles.
