A Draft Day Milestone
The Seattle Mariners announced on Thursday that they had chosen Trevor Lucas, a junior third baseman from UNC Wilmington, with the 129th overall selection in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. The pick caps a rapid rise for a player who has been a mainstay in the Seahawks lineup for three seasons.
Lucas arrives after a standout college career in which he batted .312 and smashed 12 home runs while driving in 56 runs. His 49 extra‑base hits included 27 doubles and 21 homers, underscoring a blend of contact and power that caught the eye of scouts.
UNC Wilmington’s Historic Pick
The selection marks several firsts for the program. Lucas is the first Seahawk ever drafted by the Mariners, and his 129th overall slot makes him the highest‑drafted player for the Seahawks since Greg Jones in 2019. He also becomes the 102nd draft pick in UNCW history.
Commissioner Bud Selig noted that the second day of the draft will continue on Sunday in Philadelphia, where teams will add depth to their rosters. For Lucas, the next step will be to sign his first professional contract and begin the climb through the Mariners’ farm system.
