Troy G. Ward, the associate head coach of Minnesota State men's ice hockey, announced his resignation from the program to accept a position with the Shanghai Dragons of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Ward joined the Mavericks' staff in 2023 and quickly left his mark, guiding the team to back‑to‑back MacNaughton and Mason Cup championships and securing consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.
Championships and Accolades
During his tenure, the program captured two MacNaughton Cups and two Mason Cups, while also earning back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances. Ward’s influence extended to player development, producing award‑winning talent such as Sam Morton, who earned CCHA Forward of the Year in 2024, Alex Tracy, the 2025 CCHA Goaltender and Player of the Year, and defenseman Evan Murr, a two‑time CCHA Defensive Player of the Year.
Head Coach Luke Strand praised Ward’s impact, noting his ability to connect with players and shape a culture that emphasized both performance and personal growth.
Ward expressed appreciation for his time in Mankato, stating that he and his wife Marilyn will always cherish the relationships forged with the Maverick community.
