Troy Ryan Takes the Helm of PWHL San Jose
The Professional Women's Hockey League announced Tuesday that Troy Ryan has been hired as both general manager and head coach of the San Jose franchise, marking the league’s first leadership appointment since its inception.
Unlike many sports entities that operate under multi‑team ownership structures, the PWHL functions as a single‑entity, meaning all business decisions for the San Jose club are made independently of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks, who merely share the SAP Center arena.
A Coach With a Proven Track Record
Ryan arrives with an extensive résumé that includes three seasons at the helm of the Toronto Sceptres, where he captured the league’s Coach of the Year honor in 2024, and a stint leading Canada’s national team through the 2022 Olympic cycle, a campaign that culminated in a gold‑medal performance.
He also guided Canada to a silver‑medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Olympic Hockey Tournament in Milano‑Cortina, where the team fell 2‑1 to the United States in the gold‑medal game, and he brings nine years of experience as an assistant and head coach with Hockey Canada.
In a statement, Ryan said he is excited to “build a team that represents the Bay Area and grows women’s hockey on the West Coast,” emphasizing community engagement and competitive excellence as twin pillars of the franchise’s mission.
