A Heist in the Heartland
Early Sunday morning, staff at Troy University discovered that a cache of high‑value camera equipment had vanished from the team bus that had been stationed at a downtown Omaha hotel.
The missing items included five interchangeable lenses, a brand‑new Nikon Z9 body, five Sony batteries and a black Sony case emblazoned with Troy’s logo, collectively appraised at roughly $35,000.
Investigators determined that the equipment had been secured in the bus’s storage compartment when the vehicle was parked at the Hyatt on 12th Street since the previous afternoon, making the theft a brazen act committed while the bus was unattended.
University officials quickly reached out to the NCAA, Creighton Athletics, Omaha Athletics and the city of Omaha, expressing appreciation for the assistance and hospitality they had received throughout the College World Series.
Local leaders in Omaha were praised for their gracious hosting, and the incident underscored the tight‑knit collaboration that often surrounds major collegiate sporting events.
While the investigation continues, the episode serves as a reminder of the logistical challenges that accompany large‑scale tournaments and the importance of vigilance in protecting valuable assets.
