Troy University Secures Commitment from Transfer Pitcher Layne Akers

The sophomore from Murfreesboro brings a strong offensive and defensive résumé to the Trojans

Troy University’s baseball program has announced the addition of Layne Akers, a highly touted transfer pitcher, ahead of the upcoming season.

Akers, a 6‑foot‑200‑pound sophomore hailing from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, arrives after completing a redshirt year at Middle Tennessee State University in 2025.

During the 2026 campaign, he started 44 of 46 games, batting .324 with 12 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 31 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

His offensive production was complemented by a stellar defensive showing, posting a .977 fielding percentage with 42 putouts, one assist and four double plays.

Akers earned Second‑Team All‑Conference USA honors and was named to the All‑CUSA Freshman squad, underscoring his impact in his first year of eligibility.

A versatile two‑way talent

At Siegel High School, Akers was an All‑County athlete, laying the groundwork for his collegiate success.

With three years of eligibility remaining, he is expected to contribute immediately as both a pitcher and a designated hitter, adding depth and flexibility to Troy’s roster.
