As the 2026 Tennessee high school football season approaches, The Daily Herald’s sports desk is turning the spotlight on the top returning defensive players who are poised to shape the upcoming slate of games.
Defensive Standouts to Watch
Conner Duncan of Battle Creek led his team with 67 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery, establishing himself as a steady presence on the line.
At Columbia Academy, Nathanel Karkau contributed 40 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble, while Xzavior Murphy earned All‑Region 4‑5A First Team honors with 40 tackles and five sacks.
Zane Nash of Columbia Central topped his squad with 76 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, and Brody Bullock from Independence added 48 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions.
Other notable performers include Gage Moses of Lawrence County (41 tackles, four sacks, two fumble recoveries), Braydon Parish of Mt. Pleasant (77 tackles, 10 for a loss, two forced fumbles) and AJ Seiber, also from Mt. Pleasant, who led the team with 94 tackles and a forced fumble.
Collin Cagle of Richland logged a career‑high 123 tackles and three interceptions, while Gavin Jacobs and Jackson Taylor of Spring Hill combined for 88 tackles, 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Eli Shaffer of Summertown contributed 50 tackles, a sack and an interception, and Ryan Ellis of the area led with 146 tackles, three forced fumbles and an interception.

The community voting period to crown the top defensive player closes at noon on Friday, giving fans a brief but decisive window to shape the honor.
