TSSAA Keeps Current Basketball Tournament Format Amid Coach Divisions

Board votes unanimously to retain third‑ and fourth‑place advancement, sparking debate over proposed simplification

The TSSAA Board of Control voted 12‑0 to maintain the current format for Division I district tournaments, confirming that teams finishing third and fourth in each district will continue to earn playoff berths. The decision preserves a long‑standing tradition that has, in recent seasons, allowed four No. 4 seeds to reach the state quarterfinals and two to the semifinals out of a field of 320 teams.

Coaches Weigh In on Tournament Changes

A survey of 351 coaches revealed a divided perspective on a proposal that would have eliminated the third‑place game, sending only the winner of that match to the region tournament while the loser would be dropped from postseason contention. Only 26 % of respondents strongly supported the elimination, whereas 23 % strongly opposed it. Support was most pronounced among district champions (58.9 %) and runners‑up (50 %), while opposition peaked among teams that finished third (53.7 %) and those that failed to advance (53.7 %).

Proponents argued that the change would simplify the postseason structure, create more meaningful games, reduce travel costs and cut the total number of contests. They suggested that a leaner system could enhance the overall quality of playoff matchups and provide a clearer path for advancing teams.

Critics, however, warned that removing the third‑place game would diminish competition opportunities for student‑athletes, erode gate‑revenue streams for schools, and depart from a format that has been entrenched in Tennessee high‑school basketball for decades. They also voiced concerns that the new approach might compromise competitive fairness, especially for programs that rely on those extra playoff experiences to motivate their squads.
