A Regional Powerhouse Takes Center Stage
Los Angeles played host this summer to the USA Football Summer Series, a sprawling showcase that gathered roughly a thousand athletes and support staff from across the United States and abroad. The event featured the Select Bowl, which pitted teams across eight divisions in 5‑on‑5 Olympic‑style flag football, and the Junior International Cup, which welcomed squads from multiple countries.
Among the standout contingents were eight athletes hailing from Southern Arizona, among them Kendren Bourguet, Isla Collins, Rylen Bourguet, Deztany Toyota‑Villalobos, Emeron Bourguet, Logan Allen, Gavin Hynd and Jacoby Strebing. Their participation underscored the advanced state of flag football in the Tucson area.
The coaching contingent from Tucson was equally impressive. Coaches Bobby Rodriguez, Toby Bourguet, Barrie Pedersen and Abbey Rustand played pivotal roles, with Rodriguez praising Bourguet’s impact on the community and Pedersen’s tactical expertise drawing particular notice.
Beyond the competition, the series included exhibition play where Team USA faced Canada, further highlighting the sport’s growing international profile and the caliber of talent on display.
The convergence of elite competition, community‑driven programs and cross‑border collaboration signals a bright future for flag football in the Southwest, as local organizers continue to nurture the next generation of players and coaches.
