Tulsa, Oklahoma, was rocked by two separate homicide scenes within a single 24‑hour window, leaving the city grappling with a wave of violent crime that shocked neighbors and first responders alike.
First homicide: a murder‑suicide
The first incident unfolded in a residential home where a man and a woman were found shot to death. Police quickly determined the scene was a murder‑suicide, though details about the motive remained under investigation.
Second homicide: a soccer‑related stabbing
Just hours later, another tragedy struck at an apartment complex on the east side of the city. A triple stabing left one woman dead and two men hospitalized, one of them in critical condition. The attack erupted after an argument about how well Team Mexico was performing in the World Cup.
The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Leon Paz, seized a kitchen knife and began stabbing the three victims. Witnesses described him as covered in blood and bruises, and he was taken into custody at the scene.
Arrest and interrogation
Captain Richard Meulenberg of the Tulsa Police Department confirmed that Paz was arrested immediately after the assault. When questioned, Paz told investigators that he did not recall much of what happened, though he acknowledged pushing and fighting during the heated exchange.
Reagan Ledbetter, a spokesperson for the department, noted that the victim who died had invited Paz to her apartment to hang out with friends, making the confrontation even more unsettling for the community.
Police response and next steps
The Tulsa Police Department has opened a formal investigation into both incidents, coordinating with local prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. Captain Meulenberg emphasized the department’s commitment to bringing accountability and supporting the victims’ families.
Community leaders have called for increased resources to address rising violent crime, while residents expressed shock and solidarity with the families affected by the tragedies.
