Northwestern State University is proud to announce the establishment of the Dr. Allison and Clayton Turner Family Scholarship, a new financial award dedicated to supporting a baseball student‑athlete who has excelled at a Texas high school or junior college.
A Family's Commitment to NSU Baseball
The scholarship will be awarded by Demon head coach Chris Bertrand in consultation with the Turner family, ensuring that the recipient reflects both athletic promise and academic dedication.
Clayton Turner, a native of Taylor, Texas, pitched for the Demons from 2003 to 2004 before being selected in the 27th round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. He remains among the top ten in school history for single‑season wins and strikeouts.
Dr. Allison Turner, a three‑time graduate of Northwestern State, earned a bachelor's degree in nursing in 2005, a master's in nursing in 2013, and a doctorate in nursing practice in 2016. During her undergraduate years she was also a cheerleader in Natchitoches.
“We really wanted to give back to a place that has given us so much,” Clayton Turner said, emphasizing the family’s long‑standing gratitude to the university.
After nearly two decades in professional baseball, Turner returned to campus in fall 2023 to complete his undergraduate degree, a milestone he describes as a moment of personal realization.
“As an alumna, it means a great deal to establish this scholarship,” Dr. Turner added, highlighting the couple’s desire to create opportunities for future students.
The Turners hope the scholarship will serve as a model for other former student‑athletes who wish to give back, noting that “we’re in a position to give back based on our circumstances.” Those interested in creating similar programs can contact Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Jordan Dupuy at dupuyj@nsula.edu or call 318‑352‑5251.
