A New Era for Tuskegee Soccer
Tuskegee University is set to field its first men’s and women’s soccer teams, marking a historic expansion of the campus’s athletic offerings. Head coaches Emanuel Stephens and Matthew Tarpley, who together bring more than three decades of combined coaching expertise, have curated rosters that draw heavily from talent across Georgia.
The squads will open their seasons with exhibition matches — the men against Enterprise State Community College and the women against West Alabama — before launching into full competition. Both programs are part of the SIAC, the Division II collegiate sports conference that Tuskegee has called home for decades.
Central to the teams’ makeup are 24 players with direct ties to the state, including Atlanta native Tripp Bailey, a Heritage High School graduate, and goalkeeper Cameron Hendrix, whose family lineage traces back to Tuskegee alumni. Junior forward Jaida Gipson discovered the program only after it was announced, while fellow newcomer Jonathan Smith revived his love for the sport to join the men’s side. Za’Keya Charles, a junior forward on the women’s team, brings a resilient spirit shaped by her own journey.
Coach Tarpley has repeatedly pointed to Atlanta as a premier soccer hotbed, underscoring the region’s role in shaping the new rosters. The initiatives reflect Tuskegee’s commitment to broadening opportunities for student‑athletes and reinforcing the university’s legacy of excellence within the SIAC conference.
